Caving
Subterranean Stoats!
For thousands of years humanity has been exploring the Earth. It can be quite easy sometimes to think that all of the great discoveries have already been made and that there is nowhere left to explore! However this is not the case! Going underground is what many consider to be one of the last frontiers on this planet. There are hundreds of explored caves in the UK ranging from large dry caverns to small confined squeezes, yet many people are unaware of the challenges and adventures that could be had! The environment underground can be extremely varied depending on the cave and the area. There are often many strange sparkly structures and obstacles along the route, which would seem very alien anywhere else… The skills involved in caving range from simply walking in, to using rope systems in a technique knows as SRT (single rope technique) in which it is possible to explore those otherwise out of reach chambers and passageways.
The Plan
At the moment we are sorting out gear and getting the paperwork in order so that it can all happen! In early December there will be a meeting for all those interested to help us gauge interest and experience, followed up with a rope skills workshop. Once we have a rough idea of experience and numbers we will put together a schedule of proposed trips, which will be posted on the forum and then the fun can begin! I’ll keep everyone informed on progress and upcoming events on the forum, under Notices.
