Competitions

This academic year we have entered two teams into the BUBC and BUCS competitions, as well as taking part in some East Midlands regional friendly competitions as a whole club. BUBC, formerly known as SCUIBL, is a four round league against universities from across the southern counties. The current standings in this league are available at: http://www.bubc.org.uk/results.html
BUCS, formerly known as BUSA, is a national university sporting event that takes place once a year. This year’s competition took place on the 14th March in Sheffield and the results are available at the forum.

Team A

Alek

is the captain this year and determined to lead his team to victory. Despite being the smallest and weakest member of the two teams, Alek does fancy himself as the best climber in the club. With a recent loss of driving license and a rapidly improving young Jay Kay hot on his heels, it looks unlikely that Alek will be captain, or indeed a member of the team next year.

Defining characteristics: climbs like a girl and unfavourable first impressions.

Byron

was head hunted for the team on account of his outstanding climbing talent. His technique and dedication to bouldering is second to none. Byron has been climbing for some years, and since beginning work at Creation Climbing Wall has pretty much given up on all other aspects of his life (understandably).

Defining characteristics: Disproportionately muscular and vegetarian.

Rose

is our resident physiotherapist and female role model. Her fluttering eyelids have earned us a special rapport with the photographer and founder of ClimbFind which ensures that the UBMC is always well photographed at events. Rose puts many men to shame at these competitions…because she outclimbs them!

Defining characteristics: A positive outlook on life

Team B

Jay kay

started climbing in September with the singular ambition of being the best in the country and a rapid rise to form has done nothing to dampen his determination of this goal. The rest of the team are concerned about how good Jay will be in a years time. His recent appointment of Indoor Secretary has given him the platform he needed to infect the rest of the club with his enthusiasm and competitiveness.

Defining characteristics: Dynamic moves and an infectious laugh.

Paul Baillie

is an extremely talented climber, who competed in the A team for the national competition. Being both highly technical and very strong, it’ll take a lot to keep Paul from the top of the score sheets. Pauls also has an incredibly important role in making everybody else climb harder with his pearls of wisdom and reassuring voice. Most of the time you'll find him campusing and making it look ridiculously easy.

Defining characteristics: colourful spectacles and smooth climbing technique

Alaina.

To describe this girl as a 'the vegan feminist' would be doing her a massive injustice. However, she is determined to prove that having a separate set of results for the girls is immoral, and that vegetarians such as Byron are hypocrites. Alaina has improved massively throughout the course of the BUBC league, and is looking to enter as a male next year.

Defining characteristics: Both strong in mind and body, Alaina is one bubbly girl

Individuals:

Shaggy

is a tired old dog. Highly experienced and injury prone, Shaggy hasn’t been able to make the first three rounds of BUBC. However, the club has an affectionate soft spot for our club mascot of three years, and the team still have a lot to learn from his wealth of training techniques.

Defining characteristics: face of an angel and unbeatable slab technique

Jack Grylls,

a self proclaimed distant cousin of the infamous Bear Grylls, is famous in himself for his brutal honesty and tireless encouragement. Annoying but undoubtedly sweet, Jack is a former Indoor Secretary and can be proud of putting together two very competitive teams for this academic year.

Defining characteristics: personality and physique.

Jack B,

Like Jay Kay, Jack only started climbing in September 2009 and in recent months has proven himself as one of the clubs top climbers. He recorded results higher than presidents past and new in the resident UBMC Bouldering Competition and is ready to try compete for a space on the team. Jack admitted that one of the things he'd most like to try was climbing under the influence. So don't be surprised if you see him staggering up a wall near you.

Defining Characteristics: Excited by almost anything and climbs in bright coloured clothing.
