Low House Trip Report
Following only a week after Stanage, Low House had a lot to live up too! Despite only having a short time to recover, the Stoats met on Friday full of psyche, excited to meet the MAM and for a great weekend of climbing!
On Saturday most of the club headed to Long Scar crag, with two groups going with the MAM (thanks to Tom Dudly and John Luckett) to try some multipitch. Arriving at the parking for Long Scar we were met with questionable conditions. Despite some cold hands, everyone enjoyed the routes: the keenest stoats stayed until early evening with only the arrival of some thick fog and rain putting an end to the day.
After a productive day everyone was grateful to return to the warmth of Low House cosy lounge for a traditional fish and chips. Many of UBMC’s new members had never met the MAM before, so it was a great opportunity for everyone to catch up and to hear what the MAM got up to when they were stoats, some stand out ones being convincing gullible freshers that the lifts in Muirhead tower went upside down, and climbing with a brutalist architecture appreciation group!
After everyone had eaten we went on the traditional pub crawl to the Black Bull and the Sun. The Bull’s home brewed ales proved a huge success as usual, with a few drinking a little too much of the Barley Wine ale. It was only at the Sun that Luckett’s group returned, with smiles on their faces and stories of 5 pitch routes in a complete whiteout! Upon returning back to the hut, most went to bed after the long day, though the next morning there were rumours of some going for a late night swim!
Sunday, just like the last Low House, consisted of a lot of rain. Undeterred, ADL led a scramble up the Bell, a fantastic route and many of the club's first scramble! With an improvised river crossing on the way and a quick look inside a copper mine on the way back, the day proved to be memorable.
Despite some soggy feet and cold hands, the trip was a great success, with everyone looking forward to returning to Low House in the spring!
