Andy graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1983 and following medical and surgical residencies completed Royal Marine commando training. Over an illustrious career spanning four decades in the Royal Navy, he rose to the 2* rank of Surgeon Rear Admiral.
A keen mountaineer, Andy has taken part in over 20 expeditions, leading seven of them, all over the world. Including two British Services attempts to climb Mt Everest by the difficult West Ridge/North Face Route.
Andy will give you the breakdown of how to plan and execute your own Himalayan, or other, climbing expedition. From preparation, choosing an objective, funding, team size & selection, acclimatisation, logistics, medical problems, and research, to of course the climbing!

Direction to the Teaching and Learning Building can be found on Google Maps or below. Once here, Lecture Theatre 2 is on the level 1.
Car
Parking is available at North East Car Park Multi Storey floors 1-5 (access via Pritchatts Road) Sat Nav Postcode B15 2SA. The Ground Floor bays are reserved exclusively for Hotel Guests displaying a guest permit only. Please note that this car park does not have a lift. Parking at the University of Birmingham is free of charge after 6.00pm Mon - Fri. Google Maps
Accessible parking is available in the staff car park to the west of the building on the Ring Road North. Arriving via West Gate, by the station, or from the North off Pritchatts Road, ring the intercom and security should let you in.
Train
The University has its own train station aptly named University [Uni] with services running between it and Birmingham New Street every 10 to 20 minutes. From the stations exit left and follow the internal road until a T junction and turn left, passing the library to the right, the next building on the right is the Teaching and Learning Building. Bus
Eight local routes (1A, 61, 63, X64, 76, X20, X21, X22) directly serve campus, linking the university to the City Centre, local train stations and neighbourhoods, and the circular 11 route runs nearby. Read more
