LUBE 28/01/2010

The University of Birmingham Mountaineering Club sent 7 students to compete in the newly formed London University Bouldering Event. This event was replaced the former British University Bouldering Championships for Southern Universities. In all 15 Universities took part with over a hundred competitors.

All competitors attempt 25 boulder problems to produce an individual score for the male and female category, as well contributing to their overall team score. Points were scored to the amount of attempts on each problem, 10points for the first attempt, 7 for the second and 3 for the third attempt.

With the weather conditions perfect for climbing outdoors, the team were hardly psyched for an indoor competition. This all changed when they arrived at the centre and started demolishing the competition problems.

In the Male Category, James Kay scored an impressive 227 out of a maximum 250, finishing in 2nd place. Paul Baillie finished in 4th with 223/250, and Byron Orde(217/250) and Alek Kumar(213/250) finished respectively in the top 10. Jack Brougham finished just outside in 13th.

In the Female category, Helen Dale finished in 4th with 184/250. Alaina Beacall also finished with a very respectable 144/250.

Birmingham's A team finished in an all time high position in joint 1st with the University of Brighton. Birmingham's B team finish in 6th.

Birmingham did unbelievably well in this competition, and for the first time in years, becoming a wary oppenents for top climbing universities. Some say the current team could be one of the best batch of climbers the university has ever produced.
